A Metro Vancouver mayor won’t be calling for the resignation of one of his city Councillors in the face of sex assault charges.
“He needs to know that I am not going to act as judge and jury and demand that he resign.”
That’s Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker who is standing by one of his Councillors who has reportedly been charged with two sex offences.
Becker says while Councillor David Murray’s case is still before the court, he won’t be asking his long time friend to step down.
“Certainly given my personal relationship with David Murray I find these allegations completely out of character for the man that I have known very well for a decade,” he says.
“I just simply cannot conceive of this kind of behaviour.”
Becker says he would not demand Murray’s resignation even if he wasn’t a friend of his.
Murray could not be reached for comment.
According to his website, he was first elected to Pitt Meadows Council in 2011, and is also the editor of the online news site Pitt Meadows Today.
It adds he has coached high school basketball for three decades and has served on the executive for minor soccer and baseball associations in the community.
