Former BC Lions great Rick Klassen has died at the age of 57.
Family members and the BC Lions confirmed the Sardis native passed away in his sleep overnight after a long battle with lymphoma since 2013.
The standout defensive lineman who played football for SFU was drafted as an offensive guard by the Lions in 1981 but managed to make a successful transition towards the defensive side of the football in his rookie season.
Among his many accomplishments, Klassen was named most valuable Canadian in the 1983 Grey Cup, and won his first championship in the club’s 1985 win over Hamilton.
He was also voted a member of the Lions’ All-Time Dream Team in 2003 and was inducted into the BC Lions Wall of Fame in 2007.
