The Vancouver Aquarium says Aurora, its last surviving beluga on site, appears to be getting better.
The Aquarium’s veterinarian team changed its treatment after getting results from a necropsy performed on Qila, Aurora’s daughter, who died last week.
The Aquarium says since then Aurora seems much better, but that doesn’t mean the whale is out of the woods yet.
Doctor Martin Haulena says just before Qila died, she was also showing signs of recovery.
“She did pass away shortly after it kind of looked like she was getting better, looking like she was responding, which was quite traumatic and surprised all of us.”
He says it’s not a clean bill of health yet for the mammal; her low-calorie intake remains a concern and her body condition still needs to be back to where it should be.
Aurora is the last surviving beluga at the aquarium.
