You may remember the name in the news or his byline in the Vancouver Sun.
According to his son Mark, the former reporter and one-time press secretary for BC Premier Bill Bennett, Olaf Hall Leiren, has died at the age of 79.
He passed away Wednesday morning at Vancouver General Hospital.
Mark, himself a well-known writer, says his father worked for the Socred Premier from 1979 to 1983 in a tumultuous time in British Columbia politics that included a dramatic election campaign against the NDP’s Dave Barrett, the Operation Solidarity union protest movement, and Canada’s constitutional negotiations.
Prior to working for Bennett, Leiren was the Vancouver Sun’s bureau chief at the B.C. Legislature, which followed a long stint as the Sun’s City Hall reporter in Vancouver.
He’d previously worked for the Los Angeles Times.
He is survived his wife Carol, four daughters and two sons, and their families.
A memorial service is planned for St. Philip’s Anglican Church in Vancouver, but a date has not yet been set.
