The suspect at the centre of a massive manhunt in B.C.’s Southern Interior has been located dead.
The cause of death is now the subject of a full investigation by the BC Coroner Service.
Forty-year-old Sheldon Kyle Thunderblanket was found east of Revelstoke.
“The IIO BC (Independent Investigations Office) has been notified and they will now investigate if there is a connection between the makes death and the actions of police this time,” says Corporal Dan Moskaluk with BC RCMP.
Dawn Low with the City of Revelstoke says the municipality was notified by the RCMP some time before noon. However, Low was unable to say whether the suspect had been captured, and whether he was alive or dead.
IIO says a second interaction occurred between the suspect and police near Revelstoke after the first incident on Highway One, but he fled from police.
He was found dead Wednesday morning.
Mounties say they believe the man, wanted in connection with the shooting of a female RCMP officer near Golden, B.C. was also wanted for murder in Saskatchewan.
Investigators were searching for Thunderblanket who was considered armed and dangerous.
Saskatchewan Mounties say Thunderblanket is wanted in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this week.
Saskatchewan RCMP spokesperson Mandy Maier says Cut Knife RCMP received a complaint of a firearm being discharged inside a home on Little Pine First Nation just before midnight Monday night.
“Upon arrival two individuals were located injured inside the residence, one adult was pronounced deceased at the scene, and one adult was transported to hospital with what were described as serious injuries.”
A family member identified Tami Frank was the murder victim. She says Frank was Thunderblanket’s ex-girlfriend, and that he had been having trouble with the break-up.
Tuesday, half a dozen charges were issued against Thunderblanket, including first degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault.
He is described as an Aboriginal male, 5’6″ tall, 209 lbs with black hair and brown eyes.
If you see him, police ask that you do not approach him and immediately call 9-1-1.
It all started during a traffic stop 25-kilometres west of Golden Tuesday afternoon.
Witness Greg Jeannotte told Global News the suspect was in a vehicle behind his during the stop, the man seemed to get increasingly nervous as police approached, then pulled out a rifle, shots were fired, and cops ducked behind his vehicle for cover.
He then hopped the median, pointed his rifle at an older couple, carjacked their vehicle and fled.
The female Mountie was shot in the arm and is in hospital.
An employee of a nearby gas station has told Postmedia the suspect was also wounded.
Police say they located the stolen vehicle just outside of Revelstoke late last night, and using police dogs the Emergency Response Team, and a helicopter searched the Johnson Heights neighbourhoods east of Revelstoke.
Investigators say deployed more officers to the area, and are were searching a four km area east of the town.
The Highway was closed between Golden and Revelstoke for eight hours overnight.
