A Surrey dispensary run by a well-known local pot activist has been shut down.
Don Briere’s Dakine Glass & Gifts on 152nd Street opened its doors a few months ago.
“We’re operating under a society license, it’s the Canadian Weeds Cannabis society, and it’s registered federally.”
Briere says he opened up shop a few months ago.
“We’re locked out of it. Police and the city had the locks changed, and told the landlord that if he gave us the keys to go back in there that he would face a $10,000 fine.”
Dispensaries are not allowed to operate in Surrey.
The city’s bylaw enforcement manager Jas Rehal says the business flew under the radar.
“We got indication the other day that there was a dispensary that opened up. So, the RCMP were leading the investigation and upon conclusion of their investigation we served the owners orders to shut down.”
Briere says he plans to fight back with a charter challenge arguing people have a right to medical marijuana.
