There’s a school operating one block away from a city licensed medical marijuana dispensary in East Vancouver
However the city isn’t stepping in, even if its bylaws say a pot shop can’t be within 300 meters of a school or community center.
The Vancouver Christian School is running a temporary campus at the Pacific Grace MB Church on East 1st Avenue, mere steps from Urban Earth Med.
The city’s Chief Licensing Inspector Andreea Toma says the dispensary was there first.
It was issued its license in May, and the church asked for a development permit in July.
“In terms of the approval process, the school was not there at the time of review.”
“Should the school be a permanent school, for the consideration to be had there, should the business continue to stay in the locations as long as it stays there, but if they wanted to grow or be located across the street, then there’s new consideration to be given to that.”
She adds for now it doesn’t seem to be a problem.
“We did bring it up to the attention of the school, informing them that there is an MMRU within the 300 meter distance, they didn’t see a concern with it, and therefore we continued and went through with the process.”
The school’s principle Ellen Freestone says there’s no concern.
“We are a commuter school, parents are driving their children into the church parking lot, there’s very little traffic walking by the clinic.”
130 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will be going to school at the church until January 2018.
