Firefighters appear to have contained a small brush fire that broke out this morning, just 100 meters from the Kinder Morgan tank farm.
Crews were called to the area just after 11 am this morning.
Deputy Chief Chris Bowcock of the Burnaby Fire Department says while the flames were near the facility, their main concern was a spread into nearby dry woods.
“Any fire in proximity to a fuel facility is going to be of elevated importance to us. Because of the location of this fire, as soon as we were able to establish what the facts were on scene, the event became 100% a wildfire concern.”
Bowcock says Kinder Morgan staff were briefly evacuated from the facility as a precaution.
“As soon as there’s any kind of deviation from regular operating that they do kind of an all stop, account for everybody, make sure everybody’s up to date with the information. So very standard practice.”
He says the fire may have been started by a lawnmower in the dry grass, and doesn’t appear suspicious.
