A wildfire burning just east of Ryder Lake in the Chilliwack River Valley area is now 95 percent contained.
Fire Information Officer Donna MacPhereson says the blaze capped out at 17 hectares and crews are now working on finishing it off.
“What we call mop up, so they’re walking the fire 50 feet inside the perimeter line, they’re looking for any heat that’s underground, we are fortunate that it doesn’t look like this fire dug in really deep underground. Sometimes they go down several feet, and it looks like this one is just on the surface.”
MacPhereson says about 40 firefighters from the province and Chilliwack department remain on scene and hope to have 100-percent containment by tonight.
