New data from the B.C. Coroner’s Service shows illicit drug overdose deaths are showing no signs of slowing down.
There were 371 deaths in the first half of this year attributed to drug overdoses, up 74.2% from the same time period last year.
And fentanyl was once again a main culprit, with the high-powered opioid linked to 60% of those deaths.
For perspective, fentanyl was responsible for 31% of drug overdose deaths in 2015.
The B.C. Coroner’s Service adds fentanyl-detected deaths are no longer an issue isolated to the Lower Mainland, saying fentanyl deaths on Vancouver Island and the southern Interior have already surpassed all of 2015.
