It’s still over a year from completion but what’s being called a milestone has been reached at a massive redevelopment at the BC Children’s Hospital.
The Teck Acute Care Centre will include medical imaging, a pediatrics intensive care unit and a high risk labour and delivery suite as well as a neo-natal intensive care unit, but right now it is a construction site.
Today’s event celebrating 32,000 cubic metres of concrete being laid, but Health Minister Terry Lake says it’s about more than a building.
“It’s the people in it, we have clinicians here that our world class, nurses and health staff that are caring and families that experience the Children’s hospital have nothing but great things to say.”
Lake says the fundraising came from both what he described as major projects and grass roots efforts.
“50 individuals and organisations made gifts of over one million dollars, including Teck Resources, of course; $25 million.”
That amount in 2008 got Teck Resources its name on the building.
The total donor contribution added up to $150 million.
The centre is scheduled to open on November 17th.
