The Mayor of New Westminster is hoping his city won’t face traffic gridlock when the Pattullo Bridge goes down to a single lane each way at the end of this month.
Jonathan Cote says with Front Street already closed, he is hoping the months-long work on the Pattullo Bridge won’t cause a big impact on New West roads.
Cote says drivers have already chosen different routes because of the Front Street parkade teardown.
“I think what we traditionally see when these types of projects happen is for the short term, once the closures come into place, there is quite a bit of congestion. But that over time even though there might be more congestion than normal, people start to adjust their times of routes or routing outside the city, and some of that disruption starts to go down over time.”
New West and Surrey recently agreed to co-operate to facilitate a Pattullo Bridge replacement by 2023.
