The Richmond School District has come up with a preliminary list of schools up for closure.
There are 16 schools potentially on the chopping block.
Chair of the Richmond Board of Education Debbie Tablotney says schools who made the list had to meet two factors: low enrolment and the need for seismic upgrades
“It will not be the final list, we’re looking to close three to five schools.”
Tablotney was asked if other schools can take extra kids?
“Another filter is that they would have space in neighboring schools to be able to take them”.
No secondary schools are being considered for closure.
Three public consultation meetings will be held in May before staff will make recommendations to the board.
A final decision will be made in October about which schools will close down.
The preliminary list of schools are:
- Blundell Elementary
- Bridge Elementary
- Diefenbaker Elementary
- Errington Elementary
- Gilmore Elementary
- Grauer Elementary
- Lee Elementary
- Maple Lane Elementary
- McKay Elementary
- McKinney Elementary
- Mitchell Elementary
- Quilchena Elementary
- Thompson Elementary
- Whiteside Elementary
