Nanaimo Fire Rescue says the blaze in the heart of downtown Nanaimo has been contained.
Acting Mayor Jerry Hong was there when the fire started on the corner of Commercial Street and Terminal Avenue, he says it’s an iconic building, where the former Acme Restaurant used to be.
“There was a restaurant there, the Nanaimo Art Gallery was there, a frame store that was there since the early 80’s, so some long term tennants have been here.”
Well, looks like the whole building is gone. But no one was hurt, which is key! We have insurance, we’ll be back! pic.twitter.com/B3uFHWEjBI

Earlier, emergency program manager for City of Nanaimo, Karen Lindsay, said it started around 6:30 Wednesday evening.
“They are working to protect exposure right now, so it’s a defense of attack at this point in time. And they are basically working to protect the business that are along side the block. We anticipate we’ll be here the better part, if not the whole night.”
No one was injured and no word on how the fire started.
