After seeing the federal budget Surrey’s mayor says the city is on target to build its promised light rail lines.
Linda Hepner says that’s even though federal funds for big ticket items won’t begin to flow until 2019 and after the light rail plan is on track.
“It doesn’t change my timeline because I think it has always been understood that this year we were hoping to get the financing model in place. My discussion with minister Sohi as late as last week was that how that capital program, how we can access those monies will be determined over these next few months until the end of this year.”
Hepner says procurement could begin next year with construction starting possibly the year after.
“Next year it would be my expectation that I would move into procurement after some of the detailed design work had been done and then construction could start with capital invested as early as 2018. So I think we are on target for where we expected it to be.”
But in the 2014 municipal elections Hepner promised light rail would be up and running by 2018 not – possibly – seeing shovels just going in the ground.
