This month’s Book Club pick was definitely an easy read and not the first JoJo Moyes I’ve enjoyed. If you loved Me Before You or even The Girl You Left Behind then you will definitely find this one a little different but still very much in her style.
The story of single mom Jess who is raising her daughter and step son is one that a lot of us can relate to. She struggles as a parent, especially being on her own, but there are other seemingly insurmountable challenges as well. Money is always a problem and then there is the fact that her daughter Tanzie is crazy smart. What parent wouldn’t want the best for their daughter? Except Jess can’t afford to enrol Tanzie in the kind of school that would really allow her to explore her talents and abilities. When Jess decides to take matters into her own hands and push forward, complicated and intriguing things happen – namely her life becomes entwined with Ed Nicholls and nothing will ever be the same again.
One Plus One is on the sentimental side, which is great if you want an easy read that keeps you engaged and entertained. The characters, in particular Jess, can be frustrating at times but in the end we are all a bit complicated and she is just as human as the rest of us. When she decides to go into debt to save the life of her dog instead of having him put down – well, what pet owner wouldn’t empathize with that moment?
It is a good book to pick up if you feel like you need someone to cheer for who is a little imperfect but still deserving. Check out One Plus One by Jojo Moyes and don’t forget about next month’s The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald.
