The man behind the social media blog, Humans of New York, has stepped out from behind his camera to write an open letter condemning Donald Trump.
Brandon Stanton started his Humans of News York blog in 2010 as a photography project. His initial goal was to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers on the street, “and create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants.”
“Somewhere along the way,” writes Stanton , “I began to interview my subjects in addition to photographing them. And alongside their portraits, I’d include quotes and short stories from their lives.”
To say his project has been wildly successful is an understatement. With more than 17 million followers on Facebook, plus another 4.9 millions followers on Instagram, the HONY stories have resonated with people around the world.
Reaction from around the world
With such a huge international following, it’s no surprise that within six hours of posting the open letter to Trump, it had been liked more than one million times and shared close to 650,000 times. At last count, more than 47,000 people had commented.
“…no longer a political decision. It is a moral one.”
In his letter, Stanton calls out many of the actions that have put Trump under the spotlight since the US Election Campaign began, writing he has come to realize that opposing Trump is no longer a political decision, but a moral one.
“I’ve watched you retweet racist images. I’ve watched you retweet racist lies. I’ve watched you take 48 hours to disavow white supremacy. I’ve watched you joyfully encourage violence, and promise to ‘pay the legal fees’ of those who commit violence on your behalf. I’ve watched you advocate the use of torture and the murder of terrorists’ families. I’ve watched you gleefully tell stories of executing Muslims with bullets dipped in pig blood. I’ve watched you compare refugees to ‘snakes,’ and claim that ‘Islam hates us.’”
“You are not a unifier.”
In addition to sharing thousands of New Yorker’s stories, Stanton turned his eye to the Middle East and traveled to the streets of Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan to share the stories of normal, everyday people living their normal everyday lives.
“And over the last two years I have conducted extensive interviews with hundreds of Muslims…and I can confirm— the hateful one is you.”
