A Victoria family had their lives turned upside down last week when they got the news no parent wants to hear: Their son has cancer.
But the community has helping them cope.
“We are heartbroken… It’s so hard to see him suffering everyday. It’s just gone from one thing to another… a healthy boy to … he’s struggling.”
Last week, Michelle Dowling and her husband Kai got the horrific news: Their 8-year-old-son Tiernan, an avid soccer player, was diagnosed with cancer.
During their whirlwind week, they’ve been back and forth from Victoria to Vancouver, and are at BC Children’s Hospital where Tiernan underwent his first surgery.
But in the meantime, a GoFundMe for the boy has raised an astonishing $36-thousand dollars in just over a day, something that Dowling says has overwhelmed the family.
“We’re just truly amazed at all the support that has come through for our community, our friends, co-workers… people we don’t even know.”
“My husband and I of course want to be at the bedside for as long as we can, and that means not working. It’s just a huge relief and takes the financial stress away.”
