Emergency crews are on the scene of an explosion and fire at an MDF mill in Quesnel.
The incident at West Pine MDF happened around 5:30 this evening.
Mayor Bob Simpson says it was operational at the time, but atleast eight employees escaped unscathed.
He says the town hasn’t seen a disaster like this before.
“At the plant, not that I’m aware of, and we’ve never had an incident like this with this order of magnitude in town.”
MDF, or “medium density fiber board” is made up of leftober wood products pressed into a solid wood product.
It’s unclear what caused the blast, or whether it is related to the explosive wood dust blamed for mill blasts in Burns Lake and Babine Lake.
