Terry Fox’ father has died.
Rolland Murray Fox passed away this afternoon at age 81 after a battle with lung cancer.
His family broke the news that “our dad and Grandpa is no longer telling jokes,” late this evening.
We have witnessed once again the pain cancer causes but we know, oh how we know, that we are not alone.
The Fox family disclosed Rolland’s ailment earlier this year, noting he had begun smoking at 19 but quit 30 years ago on a dare.
Like his son, the senior Fox was well known for his advocacy in the fight against cancer.
Terry became a national icon after he ran more than 5,000 kilometers across Canada with an amputated leg in a bid to raise money to fight cancer.
Failing health prevented him from completing his journey, but the achievement inspired a movement, with annual memorial runs organized in communities across the country.
Since his death, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $700 million for cancer research.
Premier Christy Clark issues the following statement:
“B.C., Canada, and the world have lost a dedicated, resolute pillar in the fight against cancer in Rolly Fox…He made the Hero’s dream to beat cancer stronger and closer, not just for him but the millions of people inspired by him and the Fox family, and the thousands of families forever changed by life-saving cancer research”.
