The chair of the Mayor’s Council says TransLink will ensure everyone can get through fare gates before they are all closed.
Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson vows that TransLink will have a solution in place for disabled riders.
“Well it is work in progress. There is a couple different options I know TransLink staff have looked at to make sure the system is accessible to everybody. Looking at other cities and what they have done with their transit systems to make sure that everyone has access and at the same time you have a fare gate system that works properly.”
“That is the challenge that TransLink is, I am sure, going to rise to. Obviously all of us are watching closely and those of us that are on the board are going to be asking the tough questions and going to be making sure that is what happens.”
Translink minister Peter Fassbender delivered an ultimatum this week saying fare gates can’t close as schedule April 8th unless a fix is in place.
Disabled riders were initially told by Translink they would have to call ahead or at the station so staff could let them through the fare gates.
