The mayor of Vancouver says all eyes are on Ottawa to see if federal promises of billions of dollars for infrastructure projects will be unleashed.
Gregor Robertson says the city has big asks in to fund the mayor’s ten-year transit plan and for a big injection of cash for affordable housing.
“I am hopeful we are going to see some significant commitments coming out of Ottawa. They have certainly hinted that these are commitments they are going to follow through on in this budget.”
Robertson says the Broadway SkyTrain line plan is a few years away from being shovel ready though.
“We do have teams of people already working on the design piece of that. So over the next couple of years there are tens of millions of dollars of work to do in that initial phase of design before that project actually starts.”
“There is a lot of money that goes into professionals designing and preparing for the construction. That is the same with Surrey too. Those two big projects and the Pattullo bridge need people working on them right off the bat. So there effectively is significant money to spend on those projects advancing them as fast as we can.”
The federal budget comes down at month’s end.
