After giving an ultimatum on fare gates accessibility, the Minister responsible for Translink says the question of how to fund the system is still one needing an answer.
Peter Fassbender says there are some dominos yet to drop that will affect how the transit system will be funded.
“The biggest thing will be ensuring that we clearly understand what the Federal government is going to be doing in terms of their budget. So we are looking forward to that. Then we need to work together with the Mayors Council and the Board to make sure that the system will be fully funded.”
Fassbender says this month’s Federal budget, and its anticipated billions of dollars for infrastructure projects, is the biggest factor in determining Translink funding.
“Of course it will. Any money Ottawa is prepared to put on the table above the traditional share is going to have an impact but we will have to wait to see what that is.”
Fassbender says Translink is working on scoping out the two biggest transit projects, the Broadway SkyTrain line and light rail in Surrey.
