BC’s Education minister says the Syrian refugee children going into the school system will be fully funded.
Mike Bernier says school districts will get the same per student funding for the Syrian children as any other new student into the system.
When asked about if there is money there for needs unique to the those children, like English lessons, Bernier insists there is flexibility in the funding.
“Where the flexibility is, is completely at the discretion of the local school districts who understand the special needs that might be required. special counselling et cetera. What we committed to doing is making sure that, that funding is there for the school districts. The school districts themselves are then committed to making sure that the resources are in play using that funding to help the students.”
Some people have raised concerns about long wait lists for basic English classes and a need for more funding for those language courses.
