A shallow, powerful earthquake struck just off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
Back in B.C., Emergency Management B.C. says it’s aware of the Wednesday earthquake, and the tsunami warning also in place there.
It says there is no reason to believe, at this point, the earthquake poses any threat to the B.C. coast.
Emergency Management B.C. says it will continue to monitor the situation.
The shallow quake was originally measured by the U.S. Geological Survey at a 7.9, but has been downgraded to a 7.8.
Australia previously had a tsunami warning in place, but that is no longer in effect.
