2015 was a record year for organ donations in British Columbia.
A concentrated effort by health care staff in hospitals and increased public awareness get the credit.
Ed Ferre with BC Transplant says the message of organ donation is resonating more in B.C. than anywhere else in Canada.
“We had 422 life saving transplants in the province last year, and that is certainly a record. If you looked at the province five years ago we had a donation rate of about 7.2 and in 2015 our donation rate was 20.2 so we are well above the national average of 16.”
There was also a record number of deceased donors in Fraser Health, Interior Health, Provincial Health Services and Vancouver Coastal Health authorities
