Shaw is the first of Canada’s big cable companies to release details of its new “skinny” TV service, ahead of the March deadline from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC.)
It’s called the Limited TV package, and it is limited.
For $25 a month viewers get 44 basic channels.
But, there is a catch.
You need equipment, which starts at $5 a month to rent, or $138 to purchase outright.
That version of the HD box is also not a PVR, which if you want will cost $10 extra a month.
Theme packs start at $6 a month, but add two of them and you are already paying as much as you would for the next highest plan…Shaw Personal TV.
That plan gives a wider selection including a few lifestyles and sports channels, and if you pick it for the first six months you get a break, which takes your plan down to the same price as that Limited TV package.
Thanks to rules adopted last year, television service providers must offer Canadians a “skinny” option aimed at giving consumers more choice, flexibility and affordable options.
