Are existing penalties for realtors who break the rules enough, and does the body responsible for doling out those consequences do so with a heavy enough hand?
Those are the questions being raised, after a look at recent disciplinary decisions for by the Real Estate Council of B.C.
Since November, there have been 30 disciplinary decisions made by the Council, the body responsible for regulating licensed realtors in this province.
The vast majority, 21 decisions, involved reprimands and fines only, and 18 of those for amounts between $1000 and $2500.
The heaviest fine is $10,000 and was only handed out once in that time frame.
Only two decisions resulted in cancelled licenses, one for 3 years and the other for 30 months.
There were 6 suspensions handed out, most for less than a month, with one suspension being 6 months long.
