The B.C. government is kicking in 15 million dollars to throw the province’s music industry a lifeline.
A new “BC Music Fund” aims to develop jobs, help live acts, create a touring strategy and introduce kids to music.
Michael Buble says the fund will help others do what he was fortunate enough to do — build a musical career at home.
“I feel like the onus is on people like us, people like us who have established ourselves in this business to talk to people throughout the world to tell them there is an opporutnity to come here. Because to be honest with you, they don’t know yet. They don’t know yet. They haven’t met us yet.”
Well known talent manager Bruce Allen says the music industry is really suffering and this new fund is a big deal.
“Without out a doubt, it’s a lifeline. For everybody. But especially for the young acts. It’s really important for the young acts.”
Allen says with benefits for musical artists in places like Ontario, B.C. musicians were forced to go elsewhere to earn their success.
It’s a sentiment shared by B.C. success story Matt Good, who says the point of the money isn’t to help already established acts – but rather to rebuild a decimated provincial music scene.
“When we were younger we used to play in, everyone went to Kamloops, Kelowna, all those small towns in the interior and the North as well and that stopped. Those internal scenes need to be rebuilt.”
Good says when bands tour around the province they make an impact on the local economies.
Schools to benefit
Provincial school districts should see some of the $15 million in the newly created fund.
Premier Christy Clark says young people need to be exposed to music.
“[The fund] will include music education, so that will find its way into schools around the province. That is one of the most effective ways to deploy it because we have got a huge number of schools in every single community.”
The money will be managed by Creative B.C., working with Music Canada.
