Jian Ghomeshi’s criminal trial has wrapped it’s third day, with the court hearing from another of the former CBC Star’s accusers today.
Actress Lucy DeCoutere, known for her role on Trailer Park Boys testified today that Ghomeshi had shoved her against a wall, hit her three times, and choked her.
Chatelaine writer Sara Boesveld was there, and joined Lynda Steele this afternoon to talk about the day in court.
She says in spite of the media and crowds, DeCouture seemed poised – self deprecating, smiling, and offering forthright answers.
“She said something to the effect of… you’re being physically choked, how do you consent to that? And she does say that it came out of nowhere.”
Boesveld says Ghomeshi’s lawyer, Marie Henein was aggressive in her cross examination.
One issue she focused on was why DeCouture stayed at Ghomeshi’s house for an hour after the alleged incident, listening to music, sitting together on the couch, and kissing him goodbye.
DeCoutere had not reported the kiss to either police or media.
“She says that was really just her trying to neutralize a very awkward situation and just process it. She did describe being in shock after it happened. She felt kind of like ‘what just happened there’ – as quickly as it happened, just like the witness Monday said, it seemed like everything was okay again – it seemed like a momentary thing.”
DeCoutere has in some ways become the face for the conversation around sexual assault in Canada, and Boesveld says Henein also pushed hard here – insinuating she was profiting from the case.
“She was very much trying to suggest that Lucy was very much enjoying this position, she referenced her spike in Twitter followers, she talked about how Lucy, in reference to the great interest – you know Vanity Fair was interested, there was some media coverage in Australia … Henin tried to use it as a way to not make her seem credible and to maybe make her seem like she was kind of going after Ghomeshi in some kind of weird fame competition.”
After yesterday’s bombshell emails, Boesveld says the day ended on a dramatic note – with Henein intimating that there may be more on the way.
“Apparently there are some emails that Lucy was worried about and she kind of left it hanging like maybe there will be some emails produced tomorrow.”
