In the Spring of 2012 Somebody that I used to know was climbing the charts, the first Hunger Games movie was topping the box office, and B.C.’s Public Safety minister was an RCMP officer.
While many things have changed over the last almost four years… one thing remains the same and it will eventually hit you right in the wallet.
Negotiations over the cost sharing of the RCMP’s pricey Green Timbers headquarters remains pretty much right where it was four years ago….stalled.
Public Safety minister Mike Morris, however, remains optimistic.
“I haven’t had a chance to have this discussion with my federal counterparts yet but I do know that staff have been involved. We have looked at several options with the federal government of the past and the new government as well. I am optimistic that we are going to able to come to some kind of a resolution on this in the not to distant future.”
But Morris says the province also isn’t backing down from its’ position over the costs.
“This discussion has been ongoing for quite some time. As a province we are not going to pay for any space that we don’t use and I am sure the federal government has been made aware of this. They have got a role to play in policing in British Columbia with the provincial contract and the municipal contract. A lot of that space is dedicated to the federal government as well.”
Construction, financing, maintenance, and other costs put the Green Timbers headquarters bill at almost a billion-dollars.
Once the cost sharing is figured out BC taxpayers will bear a portion of the cost.
