According to new details released today, 24-year-old Matthew Hutchinson of North Vancouver, and 21-year-old Kelsey Annese of New York, were murdered as they slept early Sunday morning in a house in upstate New York.
Their killer was 24-year-old Colin Kingston, who had been in a three year long relationship with Annese until a recent break-up.
Kingston then took his own life, but not before he called his father.
Jeffrey Sezniac of the Genesio Police Department told CKNW that Kingston’s father called 9-1-1 and told police that his son had indicated that he’d hurt his ex-girlfriend Kelsey Annese and was considering harming himself before he ended the call.
Weapon found at scene
A knife that police say was purchased at a local store the week before was found at the scene, and has been identified as the weapon used in the murder-suicide.
“It’s tough to say whether this was premeditated. We don’t know the exact intentions of Mr. Kingston in purchasing that knife, but certainly it seems that shortly thereafter – being obviously distraught [by] the recent break-up, and his mental status or well-being was certainly affected by that recent break-up – he either was intending to bring harm to himself or to somebody else, in this case, Ms. Annese.”
Friends and family were concerned about Colin
“There were some witness accounts that certainly Mr. Kingston was having a difficult time with the recent break up. He did not specifically say he was suicidal, but certainly friends and family were concerned that he might be.”
Nothing to indicate Hutchinson knew his killer
Police also can’t confirm what type of relationship the victims had with each other.
Tributes pour in
Meanwhile, Hutchinson is being remembered here, and in Geneseo, as an avid hockey player and a volunteer firefighter.
