For the second time this winter, thieves have robbed the Bright Nights display in Stanley Park, this time making off with $5,000 worth of lights.
Ray Boucher is with the BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Fund, which benefits from the event.
“A lot of firefighters put in the time and effort to make this display go together and raise funds for the burn fund, and to see the work almost go for naught… it is disheartening.”
The park board has offered to replace the lights, but Boucher says it only brings a small measure of relief.
“We shouldn’t have to rely on somebody out of the goodness of their heart just because we got ripped off.”
He says this weekend’s theft and last November’s robbery of $7,000 in cables are similar, that it’s likely they were hit by the same group of thieves.
