Are there still some pay phones around?
A few, and the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission is trying to preserve them!
The CRTC is putting large telephone companies on notice: they will have to notify a community before removing the last pay phone in municipalities and First Nation communities.
The Commission says the decision will “empower” Canadians to voice their concerns to their local authorities if such a payphone is scheduled for removal.
It appears pay phones still have a use.
The latest stats show 32% of Canadians use a pay phone at least once a year.
Back in 2004, 50% of the population said they used pay phones.
