Starting next year, the cost to rent spaces in Vancouver civic theatres will be a little more pricey.
That means it’ll cost commercial customers a little more to rent spaces like the Queen Elizabeth, Orpheum, and Vancouver Playhouse Theatre.
The hike will bump fees by 2.9%, translating to a hike from as little as $38 dollars to $500.
Councillor Elizabeth Ball says it was an easy decision.
“Most people don’t realize that theatres are actually self supporting, they have to pay for themselves. The city provides the building, but the operations and everything that goes on there are actually paid from the rents that come in.”
Ball adds the hike was also due to increases in operating costs.
“Everything is more expensive this year, so we needed to be able to reflect that and be able to pay our bills.”
According to the staff report, the increase will allow for the continuing need to subsidize rates at the Playhouse and the Annex, currently 30% below operating costs.
She wants to ensure theatres are available for both non-profits and commercial groups.
