A new initiative from Fraser Health, called ‘Sehat’, encourages the South Asian community to make healthier choices.
Dr. Arun Garg leads the South Asian Health Institute.
He says there’s a higher incidence of certain diseases like diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease in the South Asian community.
“One of the area where a lot of work can be done and have major impact by engaging people and the community directly so they’re aware of the problem, the potential solution and they’re just aware of general health.”
Dr. Garg says the program will depend on wellness ambassadors from the South Asian community.
“The impact is best when people understand in the culture they’re used to, the language, just the general awareness and the peers.”
The program will be delivered in temples and gurdwaras in the Fraser Valley, which has the third largest South Asian population in Canada.
