We’ve been hearing stories from around the world about the negative fallout from the attacks.
One example is of a Sikh-Canadian man whose photo-shopped selfie was published in a Spanish newspaper as a supposed member of the terrorist plot.
In Peterborough, Ontario a mosque was vandalized and set on fire overnight.
It’s also resulted in many members of the Muslim community coming forward and condemning the attacks in Europe.
The BC Muslim Association is one of those organizations:
Daud Ismail the is the president of the BC Muslim Association and he spoke with Simi Sara about the repercussions for the Muslim faith and law-abiding citizens of Muslim faith.
He says Muslims should speak out because Islam has been taken hostage by individuals who are criminals, in his mind.
“These are criminals, these are cowards who just hide behind the faith and do all these criminal acts.”
Ismail says lack of knowledge of Islam contributes to the perception that all Muslims are radicals, and a violent religion. He thinks that media perpetuates the myths that if anything violent happens, it must be Muslims.
“Why blame the faith? Why blame the religions? It’s not the religion that is violent. It’s the action of the individual, whatever his faith is.”
Does he think we should still take in Syrian refugees?
I think the refugees are the victims…and its our right as a human being to look after these innocent people. I think Canada should open doors…and there should be very stringent mechanisms there to screen out people to that non of those undesirables enter our country.”
