The man who decorated the stone lions on the Lions Gate Bridge for Christmas from 1994 until 2011 is hoping staff at the Ministry of Transportation will allow him to do it again this holiday season.
Mauro Azzano says he got the idea of decorating the lions with wreaths and bows from his wife.
“She saw in a magazine some time ago that they used to do that to the lions at the New York Public Library. After we moved to B.C. in 1980, a friend of ours passed away and in 1994 we thought it would be a nice way to honour him, and also show the Christmas season. So we approached Highways and got permission to wreath the Lions for Christmas.”
But when odds and ends like sombreros, lobsters, and even BC Lions jerseys started finding its way onto the statues, that’s when the Ministry shut him down.
Azzano says he hasn’t reached out to the province to try and continue his tradition again, but would welcome the opportunity.
