Opponents of a truck parking facility planned for South Surrey say a dump truck crash near the proposed site highlights the environmental risks.
RCMP say none of the fuel that leaked from the trucks Wednesday got into the nearby Little Campbell River.
But Brian Coote says it’s an example of what could happen when more industrial vehicles are in the area.
“It’s not even a risk, it’s a certainty. Heavy truck parking over an aquifer like the Brookswood Aquifer could cause all sorts of poisons to leach into the aquifer and the Little Campbell River which is one of the richest spawning salmon rivers in the whole province.”
The city says the truck parking is badly needed, and the the 77 acre project is still early in the design phase.
It says before it gets the green light, the proponent needs to do an environmental assessment, which would include minimum distances from the waterways.
