The Autism Society of BC is praising Sesame Street’s newest character. Her name is Julia, and she’s a young muppet who has autism.
Director of Operations at The Autism Society of BC, Anya Walsh says the TV show’s decision to include an autistic character will mean a lot to children who have the disorder.
“There’s still a lot of unknowns about autism, both in terms of science and therapies, but also in the understanding in most people’s minds. So I think by bringing it to the mainstream media through television, will really help highlight what autism is.”
Walsh says while this is a step in the right direction, there is still a long way to go in terms of the stigma surrounding autism.
