The expected tight race failed to materialize in Surrey-Newton tonight.
Liberal Dhaliwal has cruised to victory by nearly 10,000 votes over NDP rival Jinny Sims. It was a re-match between the two, who had tangled in 2011 when the riding was called Newton-North Delta. Dhaliwal had served as the MP for the riding from 2006 to 2011, but lost to Sims by less than a thousand votes.
Surprisingly, Conservative star candidate Harpreet Singh failed to gain much traction, trailing in a distant third. He is a 23-year journalist with his own show on Joy TV.
Crime and safety have been the number one issue in the dense, multicultural riding, which has been plagued by a street-level gang war, and saw the brutal 2013 murder of hockey mom Julie Paskall.
Dhaliwal is a business man with a background in Surrey civic politics.
