Transgender children are now officially welcome to take part in Girl Guide programs across Canada.
It had been in progress for some time, but now an established set of guidelines are in place to accommodate those identifying as girls.
Diamond Isinger is the West Coast Area Commissioner for Girl Guides of Canada says the guidelines are a result of the program’s evolution to be welcoming to everyone.
“Girl Guides sort of as an international movement started as an offshoot of a bunch of girls saying ‘Hey, the boys get to have fun with Scouts, why don’t we have a program like that for ourselves?’ and so we’ve always been on the cutting edge of progress and on activism so we’re very excited about these new guidelines.”
Isinger says the reaction has been largely positive from their program, which she says is the most important thing.
