The BC Human Rights Tribunal is set to hear a complaint by a teenager who claims she was dropped from her co-ed hockey team because of her gender.
The teen, who is not identified in documents online, names two BC minor hockey groups that organize two co-ed teams in her complaint.
She claims when one of the teams had to fold because too many players dropped out, the male players were moved to the other co-ed team, while the girls were moved to the lower-skill, all-girl team.
She says it was either that squad or take a refund from the club and quit hockey.
The teen says she was “demoralized, discouraged and felt defeated.”
The hockey association denies she was discriminated against because of her gender, adding the issue was resolved the following season.
