A temporary shelter in Maple Ridge has opened to take in homeless campers.
Mayor Nicole Read is calling it a good day.
“This is what we’ve really been waiting for in order to encourage people to come indoors from the street on Cliff Avenue.”
Not everyone is happy about the move, particularly local business owners around the temporary shelter, who blasted the city last week for not consulting them first.
“The city’s been working with all of the business owners in the immediate area,” Read says, “so we will continue to work with them in keeping regular touch to make sure the impact and mitigation strategies are sound.”
The homeless shelter will keep its doors open until March.
