A Vancouver soccer team is speaking out after it says it had a “Refugees Welcome” banner confiscated and three of it’s members turfed from a Whitecaps game.
“Left Wingers FC” member Angus Wong says he doesn’t understand why, as fans have been doing the same thing globally.
“Soccer fans around the world have been hoisting these banners, in places where hooliganism is pretty prominent. And they are hoisting refugees welcome banners. And the sign was quite small in comparison to other signs.”
Wong says the banner wasn’t blocking anyone, and the group wasn’t chanting anything vulgar.
He says the team eventually got their banner back but he wants an explanation.
Whitecaps officials say any sign not connected to the team will be confiscated, and that the three were ejected for bad behaviour, not the banner.
