In the United States, wireless carriers have voluntarily signed up to send amber alerts to all Americans who have a cell phone.
It turn out that service is available in Canada too. But here, you have to opt in.
Marc Choma with the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association spoke with Shane Foxman on CKNW Weekend.
He says the service is free but only a small number of Canadians have signed up, since the Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette tragedy.
“As of last week there were only about 45,000 Canadians that have signed up. Since the tragic events of last week, that number has gone up about 8,000. It always seems to take something like that to get people to register”.
