Over the last few weeks we’ve seen stories about scammers claiming to be from Canada Revenue phoning people and demanding money.
The scammers try to intimidate people by saying they owe outstanding taxes and demand a hefty cheque or money order.
One of those people the scammers tried to defraud was CKNW listener “Bill” — who is an ex-cop — and Bill says he thought something was wrong when he started asking a few questions himself.
“I asked him ‘what have you got for an address?’ and he says it’s 4526, and I say ‘my postal code?’ and he gave me the wrong postal code,” Bill says.
“So it tipped me off that he was a fraudster,” he says.
Meanwhile, the real C-R-A is warning people if you do get a similar phone call, just hang up and phone the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
