Shawnigan Lake RCMP and a dive team have recovered a 90-year-old man and his vehicle from the water.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the meantime, the ferry dock will remain closed and sailings cancelled until it’s been deemed safe to re-open.
BC Ferries has advised alternative arrangements can be made on Highway 17 and Highway 1.
BC Ferries says it’s on the scene of a vehicle driving down a ramp and off one of its terminals into the water at a high speed.
It happened at around 8:10 this morning at the Mill Bay Terminal, according to spokesperson Deborah Marshall.
“….A vehicle drove through a secured barrier gate at the top of the trustle at a high rate of speed and launched itself into the water. Our ship had departed the terminal about five minutes prior and was a good mile out in the inlet at the time of the incident.”
Marshall says officials are still on the scene and investigating.
In the meantime, the Mill Bay-Brentwood Bay route has been suspended.
