A Coquitlam woman says allegations facing the father of Alan Kurdi, the little Syrian boy whose body washed up on a Turkish beach, are not true.
An Iraqi couple, who also lost two children when the vessel capsized, claims Abdullah Kurdi was the smuggler.
Kitt Maitland, who was part of the group who tried to sponsor Abdullah’s brother, says ..
“The world is treating him like he is a criminal, I don’t understand, I mean the man is beaten up with grief, and reporters bombarding him with questions, and then this thing about him being a smuggler, that is absolutely heartbreaking.”
The Iraqi couple alleged that after the accident, Kurdi begged them not to tell police that he was the boat’s captain.
“It’s absolutely untrue as far as I’m concerned.”
Kurdi insists he paid smugglers for the deadly voyage.
Maitland says Kurdi was looking for a better life for his family.
“There is just no way. He was trying to find a better life for his wife and kids. If anything he was a victim, along with the rest of them who didn’t make it in that boat.”
