A Port Coquitlam man is facing two charges of Fraud under $5,000 after he managed to evade tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge.
Surrey RCMP says 49 year old Gregory Murray used cable wire and duct tape to flip the license plate on the 1993 Geo Metro Car he was driving.
Corporal Scotty Schumann with Surrey RCMP says it happened on at least two occasions.
“An off-duty member was crossing the Golden Ears Bridge, and saw a car in front of him with no license plate. And that got his attention, thinking maybe the car was uninsured. So when he followed the car across the bridge, and after they had checked the toll camera, to his surprise, the plate magically flipped up.”
In December of 2014, an off-duty CCIT officer was following the car towards Ridge Meadows.
The officer noticed there was no plate on the vehicle.
The vehicle was followed again a second time this year, and Murray was arrested.
Surrey RCMP says this incident is a reminder to anyone trying to beat toll systems that it is a criminal offence – and the penalties are stiff.
